are you artist?

Good day my dear friends,

are you artist? | Maria Anna van DrielOccasionally I am asked how it is that after years of being an artist to be still in an experimental stage.
How it is that I do not hold a style established.
I can quite easily explain this, I want the freedom to create art that my heart and my emotions show.
Today in the style of Dali, tomorrow Rembrandt and the day after that maybe Apple.
Why should I as a free artist myself commit to one style, what’s that point?
I would just restricting myself, caught up in that infamous box.
I want to experience the freedom to create in my own way!

So NO, I’m not in an experimental phase … I create what the canvas is telling me.
Sometimes I look for minutes at a blank canvas and the lines and colours will form by themselves through the music I hear or a conversation that I happen to overhear on a radio.

I believe that an artist has to be able to monitor her/his emotions and also to be able to work with them.
It is too ridiculous for words that you as a free spirit limit imposed by the media … by people who will tell you how you should make your painting and what colours you should use.
When you are caught up in that web you aren’t making your own art anymore but someone else’s and that will be a shame.
A painting or sculpture is that what an artist wants to tell you … it is a piece of someone’s thoughts and that can only be in control by the artist him/herself.

If people try to tame the free spirit of an artist they will kill him and eventually he will actually disappear from the stage!
The authentic artist will be a pre-programmed robot he/she is certainly not envisioned at the beginning of his /her carrier.

For what is art … what the curator of the gallery tells you, or what people like and therefore buy it?

Look, it’s great to be hanging in a gallery or museum but we need the people who like your work and therefore will buy it.
Yes we have a commercial need for us to provide our maintenance and I know it’s a very tough job for many artists because they are alone in the world of art… but that does not mean that you must lose yourself as an artist.
Yes I know… I’m one of the lucky ones to know someone who controls my PR and maintains it…but still I follow my own emotions and thoughts.

Dare to think outside of the box and dare to be the artist that lives within you….dare to dream big and reach out for the world.

Warm greetings, Maria Anna van Driel.
